CBS Sports Blog Poll Ballot – I Voted For Oklahoma!

I’ll skip giving you a team by team breakdown this week because well...I want to spend my time explaining why I moved Oklahoma past Texas this week since it is the hottest topic in college football. I understand that the debate won’t be settled with this post and for that reason I won’t beleaguer the point but I will say that it was a difficult decision.

First let me acknowledge that Texas did beat Oklahoma on October 11th in the Cotton Bowl. However, let me also acknowledge that Texas lost to Texas Tech on November 1st creating the conundrum of three one loss teams who are all ranked in the Top 7 of the BCS. As you know the Sooners in turn pounded the Red Raiders 65-21 on just two weeks ago. Just to make sure you are following, Texas beat Oklahoma who beat Texas Tech who beat Texas and they all have an 11-1 record. I didn’t but into the head-to-head because it just doesn’t provide a solution. Instead I went with the entire resume of a season and not just one of 12 weekends of football.

When you look at the top 14 teams in this week’s BCS standings Oklahoma owns a 4-1 record with wins against Texas Tech, TCU, Cincinnati and Oklahoma State and of course the loss to Texas. Texas is 2-1 with wins over Oklahoma and Oklahoma State and a loss to Texas Tech. The Red Raiders have an equal 2-1 record with wins over Texas and Oklahoma State and the loss to the Sooners. When you step back and look at it you’ll see that Oklahoma played 5 of the Top 14 teams in the country with Texas and Texas Tech only played 3. Tougher schedule and better record go to the Sooners.

In addition Oklahoma beat an Oklahoma State team on the road by 20 and the Longhorns only beat them at home by 4. In fact, of the three teams Oklahoma is the only one to get a win over a ranked team on the road. Texas blew their chance in Lubbock and Texas Tech was blown out in their opportunity in Norman.

I realize that this formula won’t satisfy all but it works for me and at the end of the day I really can live with it. Now on to my ballot.

Thanksgiving Football Gives Us Nothing

I don’t know about you but I didn’t watch a single football game in its entirety on Thursday. Why? There wasn’t one worth watching. The NFL threw us a bunch of junk match-ups that ended in an average score of 43-13. Then ESPN blesses us with 40 point decision between Texas and Texas A&M. We really couldn’t have had worse football match-ups on Thanksgiving.

I don’t know how but there has to be a better way to decide who plays on Thanksgiving. I realize that the Dallas Cowboys and Detroit Lions are the traditional players on Thanksgiving but it wasn’t working for me this year and it didn’t work for the NFL either. This is the day when the National Football League stands alone to market their product. They have a slate of three games with no other competition from other markets and what they gave us on Thursday was boring!

Prepare For Holiday Guest

With the Holiday Season now upon us most of us will either be traveling somewhere or having guest to our homes. If you are anything like me then giving up your bed isn’t an option so that means if the guest room is already full then the couch or futon are the next best options. That is unless you consider air beds. They are comfortable, easy to inflate and easy to store. Its your perfect solution for the holiday sleep over.

NCAAF Pretend Playoff Scenarios

A BCS Playoff Would Keep 11-1 Texas Tech's Title Hopes Alive!

As the bowl predictions are being published on what seems to be a daily basis I can’t help but wonder how cool it would be if we were talking playoff scenarios instead. The BCS is a foolishly flawed system but I believe that the majority of the problem is that it is designed to select only two schools to compete for the national title. There isn’t a system around that can do that without drawing criticism.

The AP poll selected the national champion for years and many times it fell under criticism. Since its inception the BCS has drawn criticism and each step of its evolution seems to alienate more and more college football fans. However, what if the BCS system was used to select the top 8 teams for a playoff? There would still be criticism (as long as we have football we’ll have criticism) but I think a lot less. There are currently five BCS football games and you could use those sites to host the playoffs. The top 4 teams would be the “home” team and would host the first round of the playoffs. The four losers would then be sent to two of the BCS bowls with the winners being sent to two others. The BCS bowls would keep the current rotation so that each site has equal opportunity to host both advancing rounds and consolation games in alternating years.

Yes, I do understand that two BCS bowl games wouldn’t really count for much every year but if you stop and thing about it, under the current system you have four BCS bowls that don’t really count for much every year. This system raises the stakes and makes the BCS bowls even better than before.

Here’s a sneak peek at what it would look like based upon the most recent BCS standings.

8. Penn State (Rose Bowl) at 1 Alabama (Sugar Bowl)
Loser faces the loser of the Texas Tech/Texas game in the Fiesta Bowl.

Winner faces the winner of the Texas Tech/Texas game in the Orange Bowl.

7. Texas Tech (Cotton Bowl) at 2. Texas (Fiesta Bowl)
Loser faces the loser of the Penn State/Alabama in the Fiesta Bowl.
Winner faces the winner of the Penn State/Alabama game in the Orange Bowl.

6. Utah (Sugar Bowl) at 3. Oklahoma (BCS Championship Game)
Loser faces the loser of USC/Florida game in the Rose Bowl.
Winner faces the winner of the USC/Florida Game in the Sugar Bowl

5. USC (Fiesta Bowl) at 4. Florida (BCS Championship Game)
Loser faces the loser of the Utah/Florida game in the Rose Bowl.
Winner faces the winner of the Utah/Oklahoma game in the Sugar Bowl
(Indicates predicted bowl game)

BCS Championship Game – Orange Bowl Winner vs. Sugar Bowl Winner – Played at Dolphin Stadium in Miami, FL

What logical college football fan wouldn’t want to see these match-ups? Logistically it isn’t impossible for the teams and financially the BCS bowl sites, the schools and the NCAA would make a killing. Before you throw out the, “too much travel for the fans argument” keep in mind that NCAA basketball fans travel for almost a month to watch their teams make their way through conference and then the NCAA tournaments.

Hornets Return To OKC

The New Orleans Hornets return to the city that gave them shelter for two seasons in the wake of Hurricane Katrina. Now the Ford Center crowd faces the decision of cheering for the team that drew the NBA to Oklahoma City or for the team that has made the Sooner state their new home.

There hasn’t been a lot to cheer for in the way of wins this season for the Thunder but there really were no expectations either. The Hornets can’t say the same! They bear the weight of the expectation of making a deep playoff run but have only produced a .500 record to this point. I could make the argument that New Orleans has been more of a disappointment this season than the Thunder have.

Oklahoma City could be the remedy to right the New Orleans ship. After playing in the Ford Center on Friday night they travel back to the Big Easy to host the Thunder on Saturday night. They could be two games above .500 by the end of the weekend.

Thunder Hit Season’s Low Point

The 2008-09 NBA season is only 12 games old but you have to believe that the Oklahoma City Thunder have already reached rock bottom. After going 0-2 on a weekend road trip to New York and Philadelphia when they had a legitimate chance to go 2-0 or 1-1 at the worst they came home and dropped an 11 point decision to the Houston Rockets. Then came Wednesday night’s game against the 1-9 LA Clippers. It wasn’t just a game that the Thunder could have won it is a game that they should have won when you consider that they were playing on their home floor.

Oklahoma City jumped out on the Clippers and enjoyed a 15 point lead in the second quarter and then some how the switch got turned off. LA went on a 14-2 run to end the half and then a 23-4 run in the third quarter to take a 15 point lead of their own and never looked back on their way to a 108-88. I did mention that the Clippers had only one win coming into the game, right?

Basically it was a two horse race for the worst team in the Western Conference and not only did the Thunder win it hands down they also staked their claim as the worst team in the entire NBA. I know that the Washington Wizards have their say about that but right now I would take them to win over the Thunder by double digits.

Westminster Auto Body Shops

Have you had an auto accident and need some auto body work? Perhaps your vehicle is simply showing the signs of age and could use a fresh coat of paint or just some minor repair work due to wear and tear. If you find yourself in the Santa Anna area then you’ll certainly want to check out auto body shops westminster to save some time.

1. Alabama – The Tide slept walked through the first half against Mississippi State but came alive in the second to seal a victory and keep their top ranking.
2. Texas Tech – Idle
3. Florida – Alabama may still be undefeated but the Florida Gators are playing the best football in the SEC right now.
4. Texas – The Longhorns routed Kansas 35-7.
5. Oklahoma – Idle
6. USC – The Trojans struggled early but regained the same dominant form over the Pac 10 that we saw from the Mountain West earlier this season…err…I mean over the past few years.
7. Boise State – Another week in the WAC is another win for the Broncos
8. Utah – The Utes cruised to an easy 63-14 win over San Diego State.
9. Penn State – The Nittany Lions bounced back from last week’s disappointing loss with a 34-7 win over Indiana.
10. Oklahoma State – Winning in Boulder isn’t as easy as it sounds but the Cowboys won 30-17 despite having some sloppy play mixed in.
11. Georgia – The Bulldogs struggled immensely against Auburn but survived 17-13.
12. Ohio State – A 10 point win on the road over Illinois is…well a 10 point win on the road over Illinois.
13. Ball State – Perfection is only two games away for the Cardinals.
14. Missouri – The Tigers will have one more shot at taking on one of the top south teams in the Big 12 Championship Game.
15. BYU – Air Force gave the Cougars a run but in the end BYU was just too explosive on offense.
16. Michigan State – Idle
17. TCU – Idle
18. LSU – The Tigers only needed to play one quarter to beat Troy but that isn’t the kind of performance that is going to move you up in the polls.
19. Cincinnati – After sneaking past Louisville Friday night the Bearcats have only one more test before claiming the Big East Conference championship. That will be when the Pitt Panthers come to play this weekend.
20. Oregon State – Can the Beavers truly be Rose Bowl bound?
21. Pittsburgh – Idle
22. Miami (FL) – Thursday night’s game at Georgia Tech could determine who represents the coastal division in the ACC championship game.
23. Maryland – Their 17-15 win over North Carolina put them in the driver’s seat to the ACC championship game.
24. Central Michigan – The Chippewas have won six in a row and have a huge game coming up Wednesday night when Ball State rolls in.
25. Nebraska – The Huskers have won four of their last five games and face Colorado in their season finale on the 28th.

Inconsistency Drops Thunder To 1-9

I’m glad that I’m not P.J. Carlesimo because I would have no idea of how to motivate a group of underachievers to play four quarters of basketball. Apparently Carlesimo doesn’t either because the Thunder have yet to do it this season. The fans, and the NBA for that matter, have no idea what the true potential of this team is because they consistently play inconsistently. You can almost take it to the bank that they are either going to lay down in the first half and then become competitive in the second or be competitive in the first and then lay down in the second half. We saw examples of both this weekend on the Thunder’s road trip to New York and Philadelphia.

Against the Knicks on Friday night Oklahoma City was outscored 68-44 in the first half before becoming competitive in the second before losing 116-106. Then on Saturday evening in Philadelphia the Thunder were outscored 64-43 after a competitive first half in a 11-85 loss to the 76ers. Ultimately a team’s success or failure is based on expectations and no one realistically expected the Thunder to compete for a championship but we did expect them to compete. Maybe we should have just expected them to be consistent!

No Durant = No Chance For Thunder

The Oklahoma City Thunder have a hard enough time winning games as it is but when you remove their leading scorer then winning becomes impossible. Kevin Durant averages 22 points a night for the Thunder and with him on the bench Wednesday night, due to a sprained ankle, Oklahoma City was outscored 109-92 by the Orlando Magic.

Durant says that resting Wednesday and Thursday will allow him to play this weekend at New York and Philadelphia. Oklahoma City desperately needs wins and with a healthy roster they actually have a chance this weekend. As a fan I would expect a 1-1 split from this weekend and would be ecstatic if the return 2-0. If they come home 0-2 it will be unacceptable because I’m tired of the moral victories that come with seeing improvement. I’m ready to see that improvement turn into a real victory.

Pacers 107, Thunder 99 – These Are The Games OKC Needs To Win!

Led by Kevin Durant Oklahoma City jumped on the Indiana Pacers Monday night and led 34-24 at the end of the first but would see that lead squandered through out the game. Durant scored 37 points but the Thunder fell 9 points shy of their second win of the season.

In typical Thunder fashion Oklahoma City followed an explosive first quarter with a sub par 17 point effort in the second and would also be outscored in all three of the final periods. It wasn’t a case of a clear talent mismatch on the floor, or even the bench for that matter, it is just Oklahoma City’s inability to play a complete game.

I believe that this team is showing signs of improvement, particularly on the offensive end of the floor, but they just haven’t learned to win games yet. That is something that becomes extremely frustrating for fans to watch because opportunity was there for the taking on Monday night and the Thunder just couldn’t take it. There are going to be nights when Oklahoma City is clearly out manned on the floor (like the Boston game last week) and then there will be times when the Thunder find opportunity for victory like Monday night. Those are the games that Oklahoma City needs to win in order to build loyalty among the fan base.

At some point (not any time soon) the newness of this franchise is going to wear off and then the product on the floor is going to have to sell itself. Hopefully by then the Thunder will have learned to seal the deal when it comes to games like this. Up next for OKC is the Orlando Magic who have won four of their last five. Tip off in the Ford Center at 7:00 pm.

Some Thoughts

Alabama – The Tide keep flirting with disaster but continue coming up with the plays needed to keep the undefeated season alive.

Texas Tech – The Red Raiders are just one more hurdle away from being the class of the Big 12 Conference.

Florida – Urban Myer is two wins away from having his Gators back in the BCS Championship.

Texas – The Longhorns were a bit lethargic in their win over Baylor.

Oklahoma – The Sooners could cause mass confusion in the Big 12 with a win over Texas Tech on the 22nd.

USC – Did anyone else have trouble staying awake through the USC/Cal game?

Boise State – How much would you pay to see a Broncos/Sooners rematch in the Fiesta Bowl?

Utah – The Utes lucked out against TCU when the Frogs couldn’t hit a field goal but to their credit they did survive and remain undefeated.

Penn State – The Lions made a good run but now they are in the same boat as USC. After suffering a loss to an unranked team they shouldn’t be considered any longer for the BCS championship. Instead let them begin thinking about playing the Trojans in the Rose Bowl.

Oklahoma State – The Cowboys were run off the field in Lubbock Saturday night showing that, while close, they aren’t yet on the same level as the Big 12’s Big 3.

Georgia – The Bulldogs just did enough to survive Kentucky.

Ohio State – The Buckeyes bounced back from a loss to Penn State by pounding Northwestern 45-10.

Ball State – After a 45-10 win over Northern Illinois the Cardinals are 9-0 but clearly behind Boise State and Utah in the BCS Buster race.

Missouri – At least the Tigers can take pride in being the best team in the Big 12 North.

BYU – The Cougars can still be party crashers for Utah in two weeks.

Michigan State – Thanks to Penn State’s loss to Iowa the Spartans are back in the hunt for the Big 10 Championship.

TCU – The inability to kick a field goal doesn’t make you a bad team (see Oklahoma) but when it finally costs you a game you suffer in the rankings.

LSU – A quarterback! If only Les Miles had a quarterback.

North Carolina – The rumor mill is swirling about where Butch Davis might be next year.

Tulsa – IDLE

Pittsburgh – The Panthers are in the driver’s seat for the Big East Championship.

Cincinnati – You have to wonder what the Bearcats could have done had they not had the quarterback injuries this year.

South Carolina – Steve Spurrier takes a trip back to the Swamp this weekend.

Wake Forest – The Deacons are sitting on top of the ACC’s Atlantic Division.

Florida State – The Seminoles are working their way back to prominence in the ACC. They hold they ACC’s Atlantic Division’s top spot.

Thunder Rally Falls Short In Utah

Even with Deron Williams is street clothes Utah was too much for OKC.

If Oklahoma City ever plays a complete game they could be a pretty decent team. The problem is that they only play a good quarter here or there and then throw a bunch of garbage in between. Friday night in Salt Lake City Oklahoma City scored the first 8 points of the game and then disappeared until the third quarter. Trailing 10-3, Utah went on a 21-0 first quarter run to take control of the game. If that wasn’t enough the Jazz went on a 14-2 spurt in the second quarter and led 58-29 at the half.

When you are playing on the road in the NBA and you drop off that kind of performance you aren’t going to win, even if you come alive and have an amazing second half. The Thunder outscored Utah 64-46 in the final two periods but still fell seven points short of the Jazz, 104-97.

As much as I want to get excited about the way Oklahoma City played in the second half I just can’t because the Thunder aren’t going anywhere until they can shoot with consistency. Boston showed Wednesday night that even world champions can be spotty on defense at times so I’m not worried about that because the Thunder have actually been decent on defense this year (They forced 19 turnovers Friday night). They just don’t have an offensive identity yet and that above all else is what is hurting them.
Up next for the Thunder are the 4-0 Atlanta Hawks in OKC.

Know Who Is Calling

How many times a day does your phone ring and you don’t recognize the number? It happens to most people and the decision has to be made whether to answer it or let it go to messaging. Now you can resolve that issue by going to Phone Number Reporting a learning who is calling from what number. Former Sonic Leads Celtics Past Thunder

Ray Allen was a star for the Seattle Supersonics from 2003-2007 before he was traded to the Boston Celtics in June of 2007. In his first trip to Oklahoma City to play the Thunder he ripped his former teammates for 18 points, 9 rebounds and 2 steals to lead the Celtics to a 96-83 win.

I said in my pre-game post that Oklahoma City couldn’t afford to get off to the same slow starts that they had in their previous three games and they didn’t. The Thunder came out shooting over 50% in the first quarter and led the World Champions 29-21 at the end of one.

Next came the second quarter and a big dose of reality with a shooting slump that would last until the fourth. After an amazing first quarter the Thunder were outscored 49-26 over the next two quarters and ended up shooting a pathetic 36% from the floor for the game. Oklahoma City lost the rebound battle 49-46 and had three more turnovers than the Celtics.

They say that defense wins championships and after Wednesday night’s performance we can see why they are world champs. In addition to holding Oklahoma City to a pathetic shooting night the Celtics also had 10 steals with 8 of them coming from their starting five. We wanted to see how the Thunder compared to a championship level team and now we know.

Oklahoma City plays next at the division leading Utah Jazz on Friday night.

This Could Be A Good Time To Play The Boston Celtics

The Oklahoma City Thunder aren’t in the same league as the Boston Celtics. Well, they are in the same league, literally, but Oklahoma City is a far cry from being a world championship team. So why do I feel like they might be able to beat the Celtics? It’s all about timing!

Boston played last night in Houston and won an exciting 103-99 decision over the previously unbeaten Rockets. After Oklahoma City tonight they are back to Boston to play the 2-2 Milwaukee Bucks on Friday night. There is the possibility that the 1-2 Thunder are a little under the Celtic’s radar. The right team playing in the right venue under the right circumstances could pull off just the right upset.

What is unknown is if the Celtics are coming down from their emotional high from last night’s victory over the Rockets or if they are still sky high. What is known is that Oklahoma can’t afford to start the game slowly with poor shooting, as they have the previous three games, and still have a chance to win. The crowd should be energetic and could be the 6th man for the Thunder but an early deficit due to a slow start would certainly take the crowd factor away.

I’m thinking that Oklahoma City will be competitive and have a shot at winning. They are energized after experiencing their first win Sunday night and have had plenty of time to rest and prepare. It should be a good game!

Pete Carroll Thinks The BCS “Stinks”

Pete Carroll said on Tuesday that the BCS System, “stinks” and he’s right but it isn’t the system that is keeping the USC Trojans out of the BCS title game. USC pounded Washington 56-0 on Saturday and then dropped from 5th to 7th in the BCS standings.

“I don’t know how the computer thing works,” Carroll said. “I don’t get that part of it. I don’t know how the computer knows how good another team is. I don’t understand that. I don’t know how they can evaluate who you’re playing and stuff and all that."

The problem for USC isn’t the system, although admittedly it is a broken system. The Trojans woes come from their schedule. With Ohio State now having two losses and out of the top 10 USC’s one quality win suddenly lacks …well…quality. Another thing you have to look at with the Trojans is that the Pac-10 is tremendously weak. Don’t believe me? Look at their head-to-head against the Mountain West.

The Trojans are currently on a five game winning streak, including three shutouts, but the five teams they’ve played (Oregon, Arizona State, Washington State, Arizona and Washington) have a combined 14-28 record. Which team ranked ahead of USC wouldn’t breeze through that schedule? Carroll is right, the BCS does stink but not as bad as the Pac 10.

Michelle Obama Can Now Be Proud Of Her Country For The Second Time

America took her first steps towards socialism on Tuesday by electing Barack Obama as president. While I’m proud of our country for electing our first black president I’m scared to death because I couldn’t disagree more with his political position on just about every issue. Not to mention his blatant disrespect for the American people and the country herself. While watching his victory speech Tuesday evening I saw all the waving flags and couldn’t escape the thought that we just elected a president who won’t even pledge allegiance to the American flag.

I hope I never get the opportunity over the next four years to use this platform to say, “I told you so!” but I have a feeling that there are going to be a lot of disappointed people in Barack’s America.

Exercise Your Right But Don’t Be Stupid!

I’m a firm believer in screening processes and I also strongly feel that people should be subject to simple IQ and common sense tests before participating in certain activities. I’m not saying that you need to be a genius or even close to it in order to participate in some of life’s special opportunities. For example, people should have to answer a few simple questions about sports before they are able to call into a sports talk radio show. People should be able to read English and actually prove that they know how to look out of each on of their mirrors as well as give a real life example of what it means to yield before being given a U.S. driver’s license. In addition people should be able to verify that they are drug free and at least know who the candidates are before being allowed to vote in a national election.

As I waited almost two hours in line today to vote I did what any normal person in my predicament would do. I listened to people’s conversations! The people ahead of me in line was a guy who was clearly high on something. He was sharing with those around him that he was going to cast his vote for George Bush because of the space program. That’s right, George Bush! I have no idea if he was referring to Sr. or Jr. but according to him not only did Bush give him a better chance of getting into outer space but he also felt that he could then go on and become a Jedi Knight. “That’s right, man, just like Star Wars. I’m talking the future, brother, you hearing me?” He may never make it to outer space but he sure knows what it means to be spaced.

Then there was the lady a few people back who was almost as bad. She wasn’t high but she wasn’t playing with a full deck either. She said that she was undecided until yesterday about who to vote for but decided on Obama because…are you ready for this…his grandma died. His grandma died! We are going to elect a new president because his grandma died? If you are going to vote for Obama do it because of his economic or healthcare plans. Do it because you believe in the kind of “change” he is promising. If nothing else do it because you are a democrat but please don’t vote for a gut just because his grandma died.

Big Phil Out At Tennessee

Phil Fulmer is being forced out as the Tennessee Volunteers head football coach 10 years after winning a national championship. Fulmer has a 150-51 record in his 17 years as the Vols head coach and led Tennessee to the SEC Championship Game last season.

Tennessee fans have been frustrated with Fulmer for several years now but the coach has seemed to do just enough to get by and survive to the next season. That won’t be the case this year at the Volunteers currently stand at 3-6 (1-5 in SEC games) and are just one more loss away from guaranteeing a losing season and missing a bowl game for the second time in four years. That hasn’t happened in Knoxville since Tennessee missed bowl games in 1975-1978 seasons.

Fulmer seems like a likable guy and his record shows that he knows a thing or two about coaching college football. Things have just become stale for some reason at Tennessee. Maybe it is due to the rise to power of other SEC schools or perhaps it was some recruiting risks that Fulmer took in recent years on kids who had the type of character you wouldn’t otherwise find in Knoxville. Whatever the reason, it was evident that this was the time for a change.

Quality Eyeglasses

With the economy being what it is today people want to make sure that the things they purchase are of long lasting quality, even if that purchase is only $8.Depending on who you talk to, we may or may not be in a recession. Regardless of which side you stand on that debate we can’t deny that the economy has soured and people being more frugal now than before.

The status of the economy doesn’t remover people’s need for need for essential things like eye glasses. Every day countless numbers of people receive new prescriptions for eyeglasses and then start the process of shopping for a pair that will look good, last for a long time and come at a great price. What if I told you that price could be as low as $8?

Zenni Optical has a selection of over three dozen pairs of eyeglasses at just $8. They include anti scratch coating, UV protection, Lens edge polishing and beveling at no additional cost. They also come with a quality hard eyeglass case, a microfiber lens cleaning cloth and a full guarantee.

Of course $8 eyeglasses aren’t the only you’ll find at Zenni Optical. They have a large selection of eyeglasses at various price levels and styles.
